Human Environment Interaction and Movement
The economy and the industry of Madagascar is based on agriculture or the process or farming. The type of produce they grow in their cash crops are coffee, cloves, vanilla, sugar, and tobacco and the type of food they grow are rice, cassava a type of starchy root from a tree, cereal grains, potatoes and corn. The type of main livestock they raise are zebus which is a breed of cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. Mostly in the capital they do manufacturing which involves textiles, timber, and processing food. The fishing industry has a high potential but is underdeveloped or not developed enough for the future.
The country’s waters are rich and full of marine life and include a variety of fish, shellfish, and crustaceans. Illegal fishing still remains but overfishing is also a problem. Also, severe erosion and deforestation have endangered a lot of the living species on the island.
The type of transportation are either riding a bus or walking on foot. In Antananarivo pousse-pousse or pedicabs are used for hauling goods and are a common form of human transport in other areas. For traveling between cities, people use taxi brousse or bush taxis, a kind of minivan with luggage racks. In Madagascar, many of the roads are not paved but a train runs through Tana or Antananarivo and the southeast coast. The airlines there is called Madagascar Airlines and offers domestic flights.
