The island or country of Madagascar is located in the southwestern part of the Indian ocean and the body of water that separates Madagascar from the rest of the continent is the Mozambique Channel.
The climate is tropical along the coast and inland the climate is hot and rainy and has periodic cyclones. The only place that has cold winters is the mountains which have temperatures as cold as 48 degrees Fahrenheit. The land is twice the size of Arizona and roughly the size of Ukraine and is the world’s fourth largest island. The central plateau is 4,500 feet in elevation. A narrow coastal strip lined by rainforest lies from the south to the east. The terrain in the west is hilly and dry but at the western coast is a little flatter. Most of the rivers in the country of Madagascar drain out into the Mozambique Channel. This is the body of water that separates Madagascar from the rest of the African continent. The white beaches are one of the features of the north of Madagascar while the south of the country is more like desert land. Mount Maromokotro is the island’s highest peak reaching a height of 9,436 feet or 2,876 meters.
